Carol A. Shaw

Carol A. Shaw, 85, of Hampshire, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away November 29, 2022. She was born May 2, 1937, in Geneva, Ohio the daughter of William and Dorothy (Bush) Gallt. Carol received a teaching degree from Miami of Ohio and was a kindergarten teacher. One summer, while working at a girl’s camp in Michigan, she was charmed by Wendell Shaw, the brother of the camp owner. Carol and Wendell were married on June 17, 1961, in Geneva, Ohio. They moved to Elmhurst and then Hampshire, where they raised their family and shared many adventures and family vacations. They spent the summers camping all around the country, instilling in their children a great love for the natural beauty of the world. Carol stayed at home sharing her love while her children were young and once her “baby” entered kindergarten, she became a beloved substitute teacher for the elementary students in Hampshire. Many former students fondly remember playing “Heads Up 7-Up” and “Jack in the Box,” and her grandchildren often joked that she was a celebrity as every time they were in town they always heard “Hi Mrs. Shaw.” Carol loved substitute teaching because it gave her the option to pursue her other passions, including women’s golf league, aqua workouts, outings with the Red Hat Society, breakfast club, Mexican Train dominoes, and just simply spending time with her girlfriends. Carol, or “Nonny,” was adored by her children and grandchildren, with whom she shared her love of musicals, the Oakridge Boys, molasses cookies, card games, jigsaw puzzles, sunsets, and a good plate of nachos. Carol battled many health struggles with a tenacious fighting spirit. She continuously amazed her family with her resounding hope, extraordinary perseverance, and ability to find joy in the smallest moments. Carol was a compassionate and loving spirit and will be remembered for her quick wit, great hugs, classic one-liners, and incredible ability to find joy in the “little things.” The lessons she taught her family is forever instilled in us. She will be deeply missed by her family but we feel blessed to have loved her and called her ours. Carol is survived by her children, Mark (Diona) Shaw, Wendy (Jerry) Sagona, and son-in-law, Thomas Riley; grandchildren, Collin, Ben, Alex, Joy, Don (Des), foster granddaughter, Megan Schiesher; and great-granddaughter, Halle. Carol and Wendell also welcomed Chuck (Gina) Neimeier into their home who became their “bonus” son, adding two additional surviving grandchildren Gianna & Reese Neimeier. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wendell, infant daughter, Kelly, daughter, Mary Beth, sister, Jean Fisher; and grandson, Chase Neimeier. Memorial Services will be held at 4 PM on Friday, December 9, 2022, at United Methodist Church, 207 Grove St. in Hampshire. Visitation will be prior to services at the church from 3-4 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Carol’s name may be directed to the American Cancer Society.
