Verna Marie Brackmann

Verna Marie Brackmann, 92, of Bloomington, IL, formerly of Marengo, IL passed away peacefully on July 30, 2024. Verna was born on September 21, 1931, in Addison, IL to William and Emma (Ahrens) Finke. Verna was the youngest of seven children. She married Arthur E. Brackmann on November 18, 1950, in Addison and soon headed to root her family on the farm in Marengo, IL. Verna was a devoted mother to her four children, Diane, Jim, Nancy and Larry. Verna and Arthur enjoyed their 49 years of marriage to the fullest working on the family farm, traveling and dancing to polka music, playing cards, spending time with family and friends, and attending church. Verna was a long time member of Zion Lutheran Church in Marengo, serving many years as the president of the Ladies’ Aid. You could find her serving the community with countless pounds of her famous German potato salad. Verna was secretary at Locust School retiring at the age of 60. Verna enjoyed bowling in the Marengo Bowling League, serving as president for many years as well. Verna loved nothing more than being with her family and friends. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved baking and cooking for her family, playing multiple rounds of cards whether it be Pinochle or Five Crowns, cross-stitching, spending time with extended family and enjoying a meal out. Verna is survived by her three children, Diane (Garry) Smith of Hudson, James Brackmann of Marengo, and Larry (Jenny) Brackmann of Beverly Hills, MI; and her seven grandchildren, Chad (Jodi), Amy (Wes), Corey, Craig (Abby), Cindy (Ben), Eric (Melissa) and Adam (Amy); and her eighteen great-grandchildren, CJ, Gavin, Alexandra, Mason, Caleb, Payton, Mia, Elyse, Tenley, Paisley, Hadley, Tevin, Robert, Taden, Henry, Joey, Molly and Grace. Verna would want us all to remember, when someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure. Verna was preceded in death by her daughter Nancy, her parents, her husband Arthur, her sisters Lillian Schaper and Esther Roffman, and her brothers Elmer, Erwin, Edgar & Norman Finke. Visitation will be held from 10 am until time of prayer at 11:45, Friday, August 2, 2024 at Zion Lutheran Church, 412 Jackson Street, Marengo, IL. Funeral service will be at 12 pm at Zion Lutheran Church with a luncheon immediately following in the Parish Hall. Interment will be held in McHenry County Memorial Park in Woodstock after the luncheon, In remembrance of Verna’s life, memorial contributions may be made to Zion Lutheran Church in Marengo, IL; Good Shepherd in Bloomington, IL; or Christ Lutheran in Normal, IL
